History of Herndon
Middle School
The history of Herndon Middle begins with the
naming of the Town of
Herndon.
Captain Herndon and his
nineteenth century vessel, called the S.S. Central America,
were searching for gold in California. He loaded his ship with
gold
nuggets, dust, bars, and bullion and set sail from California.
On September 12, 1857, they ran into a storm off the coast of
South Carolina and the Captain and 425 of his passengers sank
to the bottom. One hundred and fifty-three passengers survived
and told of the heroics of the brave captain to save more people.
The townspeople decided to call this area Herndon in honor of
the heroic Captain. Herndon High School began in 1911 at 901
Locust Street. In 1930, enrollment was seventy-one students
and they offered classes such
as home economics, agriculture, and business education. In 1942,
they opened the first school cafeteria in Fairfax County at Herndon
High School and they began offering classes in industrial arts.
In the early 1950’s, they expanded the building to hold
more students.
In 1961, Herndon Intermediate School began within the Herndon
High School building. In 1962 the school expanded even more. In
1967 the High School moved to its current Bennett Street location,
leaving Herndon Intermediate School at Locust Street with 650
students and 39 teachers.
In 1968 faculty members played other schools
in basketball and Herndon Intermediate’s faculty dominated the games; and
in 1972 they were the county champions and had an undefeated season.
In 1968, the school had a boys and girls gymnastics team, a dance
team, cheerleaders, a drill team, a club called "Happy Chatter" and
the students were divided by alphabet into the Gunston Hall Team,
the Mt. Vernon Team, and the Woodlawn Hall Team.
In the early 1970’s, the school held
over 1700 students before Langston Hughes and Franklin Intermediate
opened. In 1980,
the old math building (which was one of the first buildings the
high school began in) was demolished. In 1986 the school was the
first intermediate school in the county to be involved in the
foreign exchange program. In 1987 the school had 950 students.
In 1990 Fairfax County added an eighth
class to the student’s
schedule. In the summer of 1991, a major renovation project began
at the intermediate school and at the high school. In 1992, the
cannery building was demolished. During the school year 1992 – 1993,
the team names we have today began.
In the fall of 1993, the school changed names from Herndon Intermediate
to Herndon Middle School. During the week of January 7, 1994 the
students had seven fire drills in a four-period time span due
to the ongoing construction and dust. To top it off, the weather
was very cold!! The students who returned in fall 1994, were the
first to occupy the newly remodeled intermediate school and have
air conditioning.
In the fall of 1994, Herndon Middle School Center opened as the
first co-facility at the middle school level. They were developed
to handle students who had emotional disabilities and were supposed
to handle 60 students. The school has been filled and overflowing
since.
To date, Herndon Middle School houses over 1200 students and
offers a wide range of elective classes and prides itself on its
academic achievement.
